Music instruction is a part of every child’s education in the Westborough Public Schools.
Children in Grades k-7 receive one 40 minute class per week that focuses on helping them become responsive musicians. Lesson material is steeped in Orff/Kodaly pedagogy and instruction is based on the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. Students in grades 3-4 also learn how to play the recorder as part of their classroom music experience.
The Orchestra Program begins in grade 3 with string instruction on violin and viola being offered as an elective. Children receive one lesson per week and then have the opportunity to perform as an orchestra at the spring concert. Orchestra continues at all grades up through High School.
Band begins in grade 5 with lessons being offered on oboe, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, french horn, and percussion. Band is offered at all levels from grade 5 through high school.
In addition to weekly singing in music class, children have the opportunity to sing in choir beginning in grade 4. Starting in grades 7-8 children also receive a section rehearsal in addition to the bi-weekly chorus rehearsals. Students in grades 9-12 have the opportunity to participate in Women’s Chorale, Mixed Chorus, or Concert Choir. These ensembles all perform several concerts per year both in an out of Westborough.
